Mozambique benefits from African holidays boom

It looks like Mozambique is set to benefit from the boom in popularity of African holidays, with the country reporting that it is expecting to welcome more than one million international visitors this year.

Deputy tourism minister Rosario Mualeia told the country's news agency that the number of tourists visiting Mozambique was rising by seven per cent each year, with many of them coming from South Africa, Portugal and Swaziland.

Visits by those on African holidays and trips is expected to bring around $150 million (£75.8 million) to Mozambique this year, the Associated Press reports.

Mr Mualeia commented: "This year is really expected to be the best year in the last few decades in terms of the number of tourists visiting Mozambique."

The country is expected to invest $250 million in the tourism sector this year, he explained, while the most popular destinations with travellers include the capital Maputo and the southern town of Inhambane.

Neighbouring South Africa is also experiencing strong tourism figures, with the growth in visitor numbers three times the global average last year.

Both South Africa and Mozambique remain popular destinations for Britons planning safari holidays, with a wealth of flora and fauna to be seen in both locations.
